5 Riding Mistakes That Could Damage Your Helmet

A helmet is the most valuable piece of riding gear a rider owns—but even careful riders unintentionally damage their helmet by oversight in their daily-lives. This oversight may lead to mistakes that reduce protection and shorten lifespan of a hemlet. Are you too compromising your safety without you even realizing it? Here are five common helmet-damaging mistakes you could avoid.

1. Dropping Your Helmet

Even a small fall can cause micro-cracks in the shell or compromise the EPS liner. These internal damages aren’t always visible but can drastically reduce impact absorption.

Caution: Always place or store your helmet on a flat surface. If you are hanging your helmet, use a dedicated helmet hook.

2. Leaving the Helmet in the Sun

Exposing your helmet to heat or UV rays over a long period of time, weakens the shell, causes fading, and deteriorates foam padding. Many riders leave helmets on bike mirrors—this is can be the worst thing to your helmets longevity and your road safety.

Caution: Store or place your helmet in a shaded area. Consider carrying a helmet bag.

3. Using Strong Chemicals for Cleaning

Household cleaning agents, petrol, and harsh detergents can corrode the shell coating and damage the visor’s anti-scratch layers.

Caution: Use dedicated, helmet-friendly cleaning kits to clean your helmets such as Muc-Off

4. Storing Gloves Inside the Helmet

Most common but also most harmful habit as sweat, bacteria, and dust from gloves damage the liner fabric of your helmet, causes foul odour, and reduces hygiene.

Caution: Store gloves in a dedicated pouch. Allow your helmet liner to breathe once you take it off.

5. Riding with a Loose or Unfastened Strap

When the helmet moves on the head due to impact of riding it creates a stress on the EPS liner, damaging its internal structure over time. In an accident, it may even come off.

Caution: Always ensure the D-ring or micrometric buckle is snug and secure.
